The file is made of high carbon tool steel and hardened. Ttrating such material (and even more making knifes of it) is too hard, so the metal is necessary to anneal. (Wikipedia: Annealing, in metallurgy and materials science, is a heat treatment that alters the physical and sometimes chemical properties of a material to increase its ductility and reduce its hardness, making it more workable. It involves heating a material to above its recrystallization temperature, maintaining a suitable temperature, and then cooling.) There is the only one negative aspect of making knife at home: process require heating and slow cooling.
But if your workshop in the garage or on the balcony of the house, there is a solution: a gas burner to heat the file, and then slowly cool it in a container with hot sand.

  • Step 1

If you are in the country, you will need to fire coals. Put your metal parts there and wait, sometimes fanning the embers. Look closer at the next photo and you will see glowing file among coals. So heat your metal to the dark red
